Vienna International Airport - All Information on Vienna International Airport (VIE)

Vienna International Airport is an international airport serving Vienna in Austria and Bratislava in Slovakia. It is located 18 km/11 mi southeast of Vienna city center and 57 km/35 mi west of Bratislava in Schwechat, Austria.

The airport is public and it is owned by Flughafen Wien AG. It is a hub for Austrian Airlines and a focus city for Ryanair, Wizz Air and Korean Air Cargo.

The airport was originally built in 1938 as a military airport, used during World World II as a military aircraft design and production complex.

It was overtaken by the British in 1945 and it stayed under British rule during the occupation of Austria. After the occupation it replaced Aspern as Vienna's and Austria's primary airport.

Vienna Airport had one runway which was extended in 1959, the same year the construction of a new airport building began. Another runway was built in 1972.

The airport's two runways have asphalt surfaces with one being 3,500 m/11,483 ft long and the other being 3,600 m/11,811 ft.

The airport was connected to Ostautobahn, the national motorway network, in 1982, and an enlarged arrivals hall was opened in 1986.

Pier East with 8 jet bridges opened in 1988.

Flughafen Wien AG, the owner of the airport, is one of few publicly traded airport operators in Europe since it was privatized in 1992. The City of Vienna and the state of Lower Austria each hold 20% of the shares, while the private employee participation foundation holds 10% and 50% of the shares are privately held with the shares being part of the Austrian Traded Index.

The new Terminal 1 was opened in 1992 with the shopping area, the Plaza, opened a year later.

Pier West with 12 jet bridges opened in 1996.

The airport was expanded, renovated and streamlined from 1998 and forward in accordance with a master plan outlined to take place until 2015.

Pier North, opened in 2010, has 17 jet bridges.

Vienna International Airport's IATA code is VIE and the ICAO code is LOWW.

The airport's busiest year so far was in 2019 when 31,662,189 passengers came through it. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic that hit the world, and air travel, in 2020 that year's number decreases to 7,812,936 passengers.
